I really liked “A Week in the Woods” by Andrew Clements. Mark Chelmsley is the main character. He has just moved to a small town in New Hampshire during his 5th grade year. Mark’s family is very wealthy and his parents are away on business often, so he has two other adults who care for him. Mark is only going to be in this elementary school for a semester before he transfers to a private boarding school. Mark is also a very advanced student so when he arrives at his new school, he doesn’t fit it very well with students or staff. He separates himself from the group. Mark does take an interest in the wilderness around his new home. He begins to get excited about a week long camp that he will be attending with this 5th grade class. He learns a lot about camping and survival skills to prepare himself, but will it be enough when he decides to leave camp on his own?
